The events in the story take place in South Africa, in 1977. South African history has been marked by the system called Apartheid, which involved racial segregation and discrimination from 1948 until the early '90s. During the Apartheid regime, the black people were treated as secondary citizens and their employment opportunities and civil rights were carefully controlled, while the white minority ruled. Even nowadays, years after the Apartheid has ended, people still recall those times. Furthermore, racism still exists, although efforts are being made to erase it.
