Title
The title of the short story “Born Again” by Anne Billson suggests that the events described in the story might be connected to somehow reinventing yourself. It could also suggest a link to religion, as the term “born again” is used by several Christian groupings to describe spiritual renewal.
As the narrative develops, readers understand that the title refers to born-again virgins. The reasons can be religious, moral, or simply practical. Nancy, the main character of the story, calls herself a born-again virgin and is therefore shocked to find out that she is pregnant (p. 79, ll. 34-35). This hints at the supernatural side of the story.
The events that Nancy experiences while pregnant are also connected to the title. Because she cannot be harmed physically, Nancy’s life is changed. Consequently, she is a new person, born again, as she has the freedom to experience everything she ever wished for (p. 87, ll. 25-30).
