Edgar Allan Poe is considered an important representative of the gothic horror genre, and the story “William Wilson” is one such example of gothic horror literature.

The language in the story helps in creating a dark, unsettling atmosphere, through the use of hyperbole and words which express emotions such as fear and terror. Since the story is from the perspective of the main character, who is also the narrator, the reader has full access to his feelings of dread as they follow his descent into madness. This is another feature specific to Poe’s horror stories, as the struggle is often focused within the character. This makes the element of horror even sharper. 

The setting of the story also contributes to creating a gothic atmosphere, through vivid descriptions of old places, such as the intricate labyrinth of William’s first school. This creates a romant...
