When you analyse the article “Why not everyone is a torturer” by Stephen Reicher and Alex Haslam, you should consider those statements that are particularly interesting or controversial.

For example, the writers refer to former research conclusions and state that: “We all have the capacity to behave in evil ways.” (p. 189, l. 17). Consider whether this is true. For example, you could argue that it is true because many studies in social psychology have proved this. On the other hand, in situations where groups become aggressive, some people can protest or choose not to engage in violent behaviour. What do you think motivates these people to stand up to others? Note that Reicher and Haslam do not resonate with this statement, and that they explain why they think this is idea is wrong, from a psychological and ethical point of view (p. 190, ll. 1-15).

Remember that arguments for or against the writers’ statement should always be delivered by providing explanations based on facts.

The writers propose that, to prevent abuse, it is necessary to “ensure that people are always made aware of their other moral commitments and their accountability towards others.” (p. 192, ll. 2-3). ...
