Part of the exam question from the written exam in English A on HHX from August 18th 2020 asks you to assess if Kevin Powell is successful in communicating his message in the article “Why Do We Hate Immigrants?”. 

First, consider looking at Powell’s use of rhetorical devices and forms of appeal. Powell mainly relies on ethos, which he builds through an analogy between his own African American background and the condition of current immigrants (ll. 1-9). By creating this analogy, Powell comes across as someone who has personal experience with the kinds of hardship that racism and intolerance can cause. 

Powell also appeals efficiently to pathos, especially emotions such as anger, empathy, and frustration. These emotions are mostly connected with the descriptions of human suffering and to Powell’s criticism of the Trump administration’s policies:
