Summary

Loretta Ramkissoon begins her essay “Which Floor?” by describing how people who die in Braithwaite Tower are transported outside. She says that the paramedics take the lifts, which are small and can only fit a stretcher if it stands upright. There are times when the door opens on the wrong floor, enabling the building’s residents to see a deceased person standing upright. She also recalls that her grandfather used to tell her how he wanted to have his own door to be carried out through when he died. 

Ramkissoon then goes on to describe the construction of the Braithwaite Tower while also mentioning the lifts and their importance to the residents. She talks about how her grandparents moved there in 1967 and how her mother’s bedroom is now hers.
