Gentrification
In her essay “Which Floor?”, Loretta Ramkissoon mentions gentrification: “The council spews words ending in -tion: innovation, demolition, regeneration, which can all be translated into GENTRIFICATION. But we hold strong; this tree will not fall.” (ll. 105-106)
Gentrification refers to a process where a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in. This typically involves tearing down older buildings and building new, expensive apartment buildings.
The topic of gentrification is hotly debated because it takes away affordable living conditions from low-income families and force them to move out or even become homeless. Moreover, local communities are destroyed.
