Style of writing

Overall, the language in Loretta Ramkissoon’s essay “Which Floor?” is neutral in style. Ramkissoon uses contractions (such as “it’s”) , which makes the text more informal and personal. However, a large amount of of imagery makes the style of writing more elegant and formal.

Ramkissoon uses very short sentences at times and most of them reflect an impactful moment. Some examples include “A mass panic ensues.” (l. 39) or “The lift traps you.” (l. 63). The use of short sentences is effective as it makes the sentences stand out from the rest of the text, and this highlights aspects of life in Braithwaite Tower for the reader.
