Uddrag

Nedenfor kan du læse et uddrag fra vores study guide til teksten:

Symbols

The author uses several symbols which are connected to the story’s characters and themes.

Anton is a symbolic character in the sense that he represents a practical but joyless approach to life. Anton neglects his emotions and is more concerned with how others perceive him than with how he perceives his own life. He also has some preconceived ideas about women and people with disabilities. He is, therefore, symbolic for people who are not in touch with their emotions and who hold unexamined views of the world.

Bernadette is also a symbolic character in the story. She is in touch with her emotions and her environment, living life in the present moment, joyful and carefree. Unlike Anton, she is able to pay attention to the important things in life, such as happiness, love, and friendship. She also seems intuitively aware that she cannot control some things in life. Bernadette is, therefore, symbolic for a positive outlook on life.
