Miles Warden

Outer characterization

Miles Warden is the main character in the short story “We Can’t Be Good at Everything” by Emma Sloley. He is a 25-year-old man, and he and his wife, Jill, have a three-year-old son, William (ll. 4-5). They live in a house with a garden. Miles’s job is in marketing (ll.78-79). He has just got a promotion, which means he will work full-time and spend less time at home (ll. 77-79). 

Miles is the only child of Fenella, a famous television personality. She was not around much during Miles’s childhood, so Miles was raised by his father. Fenella using the word “mazel tov” (l.80) to congratulate Miles on his promotion suggests he might be Jewish.
