Framing
The short film “Viral” by Donald Broida uses a combination of shots.
The film uses several long shots to give an overview of May’s situation. The nameless man behind the camera at the beginning of the film captures a long shot of May overdosing next to Hayden (00:11-00:20). The effect is dramatic, as it shows both May’s difficult situation and Hayden’s distress.
Another long shot shows May in her driveway, trying to interact with a neighbor who refuses to say hello to her (00:53-01:04). Here, the long shot highlights the distance that the viral video has put between May and other people who judge her based on what they see online.
