Sound

The film uses diegetic sounds, which belong naturally to the scenes. For example, diegetic sounds can be heard when May slams the door on her car (05:24-05:26). When social media clips are introduced, viewers can hear diegetic sounds like mouse clicks and keyboard taps which make it seem more real (04:41-04:47).

When May visits her son Hayden in his foster home, a melancholic song plays on the car radio (04:56-05:18). This choice mirrors May’s sadness of being separated from her son.

Non-diegetic sounds, like sad music, are introduced in the emotional scenes that follow the Child Protective Services officer’s visit (03:37-04:18). Here, the musical choice highlights May’s sadness and an inner struggle. In the scene where May leaves Hayden with his foster parent, melancholic music (06:43-07:51) highlights her sadness of leaving him behind. Other scenes in the film have no music at all, which gives them a realistic, raw feel. This also highlights May’s struggle and loneliness.
