Leslie Marmon Silko (1948- ) er en amerikansk forfatter fra Laguna Pueblo-folket i New Mexico. Hendes værker fokuserer hovedsageligt på indfødte amerikanere og racekonflikten med det hvide samfund. “Tony’s Story” er baseret på en virkelig begivenhed, et drab på en politimand begået af en indfødt amerikaner, som skete da Silko var barn.

Symbols

The cop’s club is a symbol of authority used to oppress. It is supposed to be a tool of justice, yet it becomes a symbol of injustice and violence when used by the cop. Tony sees it in his dream, and then in person, as “a human bone painted brown to look like wood, to hide what it really was” (p. 181, ll. 2-3). This further highlights that it is a weapon used for evil “disguised” as a cop’s baton. It is also interesting to note that Tony’s dream in which the cop is “pointing a long bone at me” (p. 176, l. 25) becomes reality in their third and final encounter: “He raised the billy club slowly. ‘I like to beat Indians with this.’ ” (p. 180, ll. 44-45). This suggests Tony’s awareness that the cop would abuse his position of power, but also the association he makes between the cop and the evil spirits of Native American culture.
