Summary

In the beginning of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jean Louise Finch, nicknamed Scout, thinks back to the years leading up to an event that caused her older brother Jem to have his arm badly hurt. One summer, Jem and Scout befriend a boy named Dill who suggests they try to get their mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley  to come out of his house. The children have never seen Boo, but they have heard many stories about him, which is why they are so intrigued by him. However, they are unsuccessful. When school starts, Scout and Jem start finding little trinkets  and other such gifts in a knothole of the tree trunk on the Radley property. During the following summer, Dill returns to town, and the kids’ attempts to get Boo Radley to come out of his house continue. One night, they sneak around the Radley property trying to peek through the windows, but they run away when they see a man’s shadow. Jem’s trousers get caught in the fence and he leaves them behind. When he goes to return them, the pants have been mended and folded nicely. Jem and Scout continue to find little gifts in the tree on the Radley prop...
