Friendship

The theme of friendship is mainly illustrated through Jean and Siobhan and their interactions with each other. By the end, Jean is able to understand that their shared experiences and their friendship connect her and Siobhan, and that it does not matter that they belong to different religious groups. The two women recognize that this is more meaningful than the “faith (they’ve) been taught” (p. 122, ll. 19-20). This shows that, despite the conflict between Catholics and Protestants during the Troubles, both Siobhan and Jean are willing to have faith in each other and in their friendship.

It is only at the end that we learn that the “faith” mentioned in the title is not religious but refers to faith in humanity and one’s friends. It is also this type of faith which can connect people throughout different cultures and beliefs: “ ‘Not just the faith we’ve been taught. Sure, there’s other faiths. There’s the faith of people, each in the other, of friends and neighbours understanding all the pain and anger.’ ” (p. 122, ll. 19-21). Because Siobhan has also experienced the death of her husband, she is able to comfort Jean better than the Reverend, who shares the same religious faith as Jean.
