Title

The title of the short story “This Is All Mostly True” written by Kathy Stevens does not immediately indicate what the story is about.

Elsie is a teenage girl with an unspecified illness, which manifests itself in “episodes” that include something resembling seizures, where she loses control of her body (ll. 179-182). She also has trouble remembering basic things (ll. 41-42) and states that she is confused (ll. 123-125).

One of her main concerns seems to be the difference between truth and lies, and the different types of lies one can tell – throughout the story, she points out how different statements are lies or different types of lies. The words “lie” or “lies” repeatedly appear in the story, becoming more frequent towards the end of the story: “What is it, says Dad. Don’t know, I say. This is a lie. (..) The mug says: BEST DAD IN THE WORLD. This is a lie. (…) Have you taken your meds, he says. Yes, I say. This is a lie.” (ll. 155-175). The phrase “This is a lie” connects the story with the title and underlines the difference between the facts and the lies told by Elsie in the story.
