Terina Allen’s article was published on the Forbes website four days after the Central Park birdwatching incident. At that point, the video published by Christian Cooper had become viral with over 40 million views.
Allen mainly targets US citizens, as the incident took place in Central Park, New York. Throughout the article, she makes the point that racism is widespread in the US, and that Amy Cooper’s behavior is just one symptom of the general issues.
Allen’s article is also addressed to white people who, like Amy Cooper, might rely on white privilege to get certain advantages. In the following example, Allen highlights the wrongful practice of white people who believe that their skin color makes them superior:
Using nothing but the color of his skin, Amy sent the message that she was superior to Christian and that he needed to step back in his place because he was a black man. That is racist, and that kind of behavior can damage reputations and careers (ll. 47-49).
