Title

The title of the novel The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga, from which the text is taken, is initially ambiguous, as it does not reveal what the story is going to be about. A white tiger is a rare variety of the Bengal tiger, which lives on the Indian subcontinent. Knowing this, readers can assume that the events in the story might have something to do with India and focus on an uncommon character. The short story illustrates this idea through the example of Balram, the main character. Balram considers himself ‘rare’ because he is unusual in escaping the condition of an Indian servant and being determined to change his life.

The first excerpt of the story mentions the white tiger in connection to someone being brave enough to escape his predetermined fate:

The answer to the second question is that only a man who is prepared to see his family destroyed – hunted, beaten, and burned alive by the masters – can break out of the coop. That would take no normal human being, but a freak, a pervert of nature. It would, in fact, take a White Tiger. You are listening to the story of a social entrepreneur, sir. (p. 293, ll. 4-9)

In the second excerpt, the white tiger is mentioned when Balram talks about his dream of opening “a school full of White Tigers, unleashed on Bangalore” (p. 294, ll. 36-37). Balram’s signature at the end points to him borrowing the identity of the White Tiger, which he now uses to promote both himself and his business.
