Growing old

The main theme of the story “The White Cat” by Jim Brannin is growing old. 

From Hattie’s perspective at the beginning of the story, growing old is a hardship. Because of her illness, Hattie is physically disabled and depends on her niece and grandnieces to take care of her. However, Hattie does not resent the physical issues which come with old age so much as the fewer opportunities, which she calls the “closing of the curtains” (l. 10). She recognizes growing old puts people at a disadvantage when it comes to finding a new job or a new romantic partner. As a result of this belief, Hattie has a negative perspective on her future (ll. 15-16).

For some, growing old also comes with a lot of regrets about the past. As Hattie looks back on her life, she finds comfort and joy in the happy memories spent with her family.
