Characterization of Hattie

Outer characterization

The main character in the short story “The White Cat” by Jim Brannin is Hattie. Hattie is an old woman with a chronic lung illness (l. 3). She lives in a house with a garden which belongs to her niece. Hattie’s husband, Johnny, and one of her sons, Max, are dead. Her other son, Georgie, moved to Australia before his father died and no longer keeps in touch with Hattie. 

Because of her medical condition, Hattie carries a portable oxygen supply and is only able to walk short distances with a frame (l.6). Because she cannot go downstairs, the food is brought up to her by one of her two grandnieces, Heather and Jenny. She spends her days looking out of her window at the back garden.

Inner characterization

Hattie’s illness and disability have narrowed her perspective, and she feels helpless and dependent on others. (ll. 4-6). She is also aware that she is only a burden to her grandnieces (ll. 102-103). However, Hattie does not appear hurt by this, as long as she can ...
