Themes

The main themes in the short story “The Weeping Fig” by Judith Wright are men versus nature and identity. The themes are enhanced through the motif of reconciliation (with the past and nature). The author’s message is that our ancestors can help us gain a sense of identity – of who we are and where we come from. Additionally, the landscape suggests that nature is stronger than man and that a harmonious relationship between nature and man can only be achieved through sacrifice.

Men versus nature

The theme of a conflict between man and nature permeates the whole short story. Both active and absent characters feel the pressure of living in a harsh environment (landscape).
