Language

The language of “The Weeping Fig” by Judith Wright is simple and easy to follow. Dialogue is used in the first part of the story, while the second part is rendered in the narrative mode. Furthermore, the author also inserts diary passages which help illustrate the way people lived and thought in the 19th century. 

The choice of words is related to the social and physical setting of Australia in two different time periods—modern and 19th century. The choice of words related to the field of emotions like grief and hopelessness help the author convey the way the characters felt or feel.
