Intention

One of the intentions expressed by authors Andrés Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Jeff Speck in the text “The Victims of Sprawl” is to inform readers of the categories of people affected by sprawl. The composition of the text makes it easier for the authors to achieve their purpose, as the different categories of people affected by sprawl are introduced by subtitles. In general, the authors show that all members of society – children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly – are affected by sprawl. 

The authors’ intention is also to issue a warning about the effects of sprawl on people’s physical and mental health. The authors appeal to logos to show how sprawl particularly affects teenagers, who might resort to dangerous behavior to escape boredom and frustration. ...
