Style of writing

The authors Andrés Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Jeff Speck use a formal style of writing in the text “The Victims of Sprawl”. 

First, when it comes to sentence structure, the authors rely on a mix of different lengths of sentences. For example, complex ideas are presented in longer sentences:

The role of journalist, banker, or marketing director is exchanged for that of chauffeur, with the vague hope that their career will resume when the last child turns sixteen; thus the term soccer mom - a distinctly suburban euphemism. (p. 86, ll. 10-14)

In this example, a longer sentence shows the irony behind the term “soccer mom”, which highlights a more complex issue aggravated by sprawl.
