Summary

Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Veldt” follows the Hadley family – George and Lydia Hadley and their two children, Peter and Wendy – who live in a technologically advanced house. Lydia is concerned about the nursery, a room designed to produce virtual reality based on their children’s thoughts and desires. After the spouses are attacked by lions in the veldt created by the nursery, Lydia wants the nursery shut down, and discusses with George the downsides of having a fully automated house.

Lydia and George dine by themselves, as the children are attending a carnival. George visits the nursery again and notices that the room will not change the veldt landscape. Lydia suspects that the room is stuck or that Peter managed to change its machinery. When the children return home, they pretend not to know anything about the veldt, and a serene forest landscape is shown in the nursery.
