Goodwin

Goodwin Lee is one of the most important characters in the story “The Third Dumpster” written by Gish Jen.

Goodwin’s age is not directly specified, but due to the old age of his parents (l. 9), we can assume he is in his 40s. Goodwin is unemployed (l. 36) but works irregularly as a contractor (ll. 7-8). He is Chinese-American. He has been married to an American woman called Jeannie who works as a prosecutor (l. 93), but they are now divorced. His lives in the same city as his brother (ll. 4-5).

Goodwin’s name can suggest his connection to his family and the Chinese culture. The surname “Lee” is mentioned at the beginning of the story, but only relating to Goodwin: “Goodwin Lee and his brother, Morehouse” (l. 1). This could suggest that Goodwin’s connection to his family is stronger than that of his brother and that he is more influenced by Chinese culture. The name “Goodwin” can also show that he represents ethical choices, as he does not like to illegally dispose of trash, and he is opposed to hiring illegal immigrants, worrying about their health.
