Discussion: Adults' responsibilities towards children

The assignment in the exam requires you to discuss the responsibilities adults should live up to in dealing with children, taking your starting point in the short story “The Splinter” by Ron Carlson. The question asks you to use two of the following phrases in your discussion: firstly, though, for example, but, in accordance with, lastly, therefore, because.

Ron Carlson’s short story explores the different roles and responsibilities parents can take on in their relationship with their children. Firstly, the story shows that parents have the responsibility of keeping their children safe and secure. In the story, the narrator does not allow Rick to ride with Damon because of the man’s reckless style of driving. But this leads to Rick “sulking” (l. 12), because, like most children, the boy is excited by the idea of an adventure.
