Relationship between the characters

The short story “The Splinter” by Ron Carlson show various types of relationships between adults and children. Therefore, the relationships between the characters, especially between Rick and the adults in his life, help to illustrate the main theme and allow readers to focus on the story’s message.

The relationship between Rick and the narrator is a key point in the story. The narrator is now Rick’s only living parent, and the events suggest that the situation is difficult and overwhelming for both of them. The narrator keeps Rick busy by engaging him in various activities (school, summer camp, the trip).
