Literary perspective

The short story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” by Ernest Hemingway is written in the author’s distinctive writing style, which is a mixture of realism and modernism. 

For Hemingway, the clarity of writing was very important. Therefore, events and dialogue are outlined in a brisk manner, which highlights the realism of the situation. 

Hemingway also used several narrative tools commonly used by modernist writers, such as stream of consciousness. In this story, we can see how Harry’s inner life is more important than what happens in the outside environment. The focus is on Harry’s thoughts and feelings, rather than on the outside events. This is an element of modernism.
