The short story “The Sea in Me” by Krishan Coupland was published in 2016. The short story is probably meant to be read as contemporary to the time when it was written, which is suggested by the fact that the teenagers have mobile phones.

The narrator recounts past and present events. The present events take place over several days; for example, the protagonist participates in a swimming competition, and the narration suggests she goes to the seaside soon after.

The events in the short story most likely take place in the UK– this is suggested by the narrator’s comment on the Atlantic Ocean: “This is the same ocean that washes up on the shores of America.” (ll. 136-137).

The opening paragraph of the story references the narrator’s bathroom, where she submerges her head in the bath: “Sometimes in the bath I plunge my head under the water” (l.1) She later references her bed (ll. 93-94).

The story contains multiple references to the pool where the narrator does her swimming training: “At the pool it’s different. I can drift down to the bottom and sit until my fingers go wrinkly. Only when Mum’s not there, of course. When Mum’s there I have to train.” (ll. 6-7). She later participates in a swimming competition there.
