Your exam question asks you to focus on the symbols in the short story “The Sea in Me”. Krishan Coupland uses several symbols which are connected to the story’s characters and themes.

The narrator’s scars, scaly skin, green hair, and webbed feet function as symbols of her potential supernatural nature. At the same time, while the green hair is something common among swimmers, the other traits could simply be physical anomalies exaggerated or imagined by the narrator. In this case, these features are symbolic of the challenges faced by the narrator in her daily life and of her feeling of alienation and need to be understood.

The narrator’s dream is another symbol of her deep connection to the ocean. At the same time, it could be interpreted as a symbolic manifestation of her wish to escape her mother’s expectations to build a career and her controlling behaviour.
