Analysis

In this section, we will highlight the elements of our analysis of “The Sea in Me” by Krishan Coupland.

The story follows a traditional plot structure with non-linear elements, while including narrative techniques like backstory and foreshadowing.

The characters include a teenage girl as the narrator and main character, as well as her mother and boyfriend Martin as secondary characters. Note that other characters, such as the boys who close the pool, the people who watch the swimming competition, the other swimmers, and the people at the beach also appear in the story.

The events take place in an unnamed location in the UK. The story ends at the seaside. The social setting explores topics such as the types of sacrifices athletes make, parents’ over-involvement in their child’s life and the consequences, sexuality, and not fitting in.

The events are described by the main character as a first-person narrator who also shares her thoughts and feelings with the readers.

The story is told in a descriptive style, using plenty of imagery. The language used by the narrator is simple; the story is told using a mix of narration and dialogue which helps readers understand more about the characters and their circumstances.
