Uddrag

Nedenfor kan du læse et kort uddrag fra vores study guide til novellen:

Title

The title of the short story “The Sea in Me” by Krishan Coupland does not immediately indicate what the story is about. However, it hints that the story will refer to an individual’s relationship with the sea.

The meaning of the title is symbolic – in the story, a young competition swimmer believes that her body has the traits of a fish and is deeply attracted to the ocean. The narrator's connection with the sea is never made explicit; scars that could hint at self-harm and her belief that her body is becoming more fish-like could suggest that she is suffering from psychological problems.

At the beginning of the story, she alludes to having gills, which she tries to open up by sitting submerged in her bath (ll. 1-2). However, she is able to remain underwater for a long time when she is at the pool (ll. 6-7), as she claims the scars do open up in there, suggesting she feels like she can breathe underwater (ll. 50-51).
