Woody Allen (f. 1935) er en af USA's mest berømte filminstruktører, skuespillerer og manuskriptforfattere. Han er ikke særlig kendt som forfatter, men har udgivet flere antologier, senest "Mere Anarchy", som er en samling tekster, hvoraf nogle – heriblandt "The Rejection" – tager form som en novelle. Novellen er en parodi på det amerikanske samfund og især om amerikanske akademikere.

In his short story “The Rejection”, Woody Allen mocks the New York upper class – and, implicitly, the American upper class – by highlighting their shallowness, corruption, and self-involvement. The characters he creates are self-interested and materialistic, suggesting the author’s aim is to criticize those who believe that social status is more important than anything else.

The author also highlights how parents often fail to take a real interest in their children. The parents plan their lives without taking the children’s feelings and needs into account, using their children to protect their own social status.
