Style of writing
The short story “The Raft” by Stephen King is written using neutral language. At times, the narration uses standard spellings, with long sentences and a descriptive feel. For example:
It was forty miles from Horlicks University in Pittsburgh to Cascade Lake, and although dark comes early to that part of the world in October and although they didn’t get going until six o’clock, there was still a little light in the sky when they got there. (p.358, ll.1-5)
This quote provides context and sets the scene, drawing attention to the isolation of the place and the fact that the four characters are now alone on the lake at night. This could provide a subtle hint that they are about to put themselves in a dangerous situation.
