Characters

The main character in the short story “The Raft” by Stephen King is Randy, as he is the one through whom we get to see the other characters. Deke is also an important character, especially if we look at him in connection to Randy.

Rachel and LaVerne appear to be Deke and Randy’s girlfriends, although LaVerne seems to be attracted to Deke as well. They are especially relevant if we look at how Deke and Randy interact with them, as it shows their attitude towards women.

At the beginning of the story, the focus is on the relationships between the characters. These relationships let the readers understand why some of the characters act the way they do later in the story, while they are under attack from the monster.
