The short story “The Quiet One” by Stephen Gibbin presents some events in the life of a thirteen-year-old boy named Liam who spends a day at his grandfather’s shed. Liam comes from a family with financial difficulties, and he and his brother Kyle are often bullied at school. 

Liam’s day is interrupted by the arrival of Courtney, a girl from Liam’s school. Courtney is around 11 or 12 years old and also comes from a troubled family. Her older brother was kicked out of school and is now a drug dealer. 

The background of the two characters shows they live in an environment where people are struggling with different issues and are often violent and aggressive and grow up too fast. 

Liam

Liam is the main character of the short story “The Quiet One” by Stephen Gibbin. He is a thirteen-year-old boy who is spending the day at his grandfather’s shed and meets a schoolmate named Courtney. Liam has an older brother named Kyle, and he is close to his grandfather. His family appears to be lower class.

Liam is a smart child and enjoys reading: “Liam was smart. Got it off his grandad. His grandad didn’t say much but there wasn’t nothing he didn’t know. […] Liam took it all in. Books were his thing. Always a nose in a book”. However, though Liam is smart and enjoys learning, he does not enjoy school.
