Analysis

The analysis of the short story “The Open Window” by Saki shows that it follows a linear plot structure. The narrative centers around a visit to a country household and contains two “stories within a story”.

The main characters are Framton Nuttell and Vera. Their interaction during the visit is the main focus of the story.

The physical setting is a village in England. The entire action takes place at Mrs. Sappleton’s residence. The social setting explores upper-class customs.

The story is told by a third-person narrator who has insight into Framton’s thoughts and feelings. The story is told from his perspective, apart from the ending.

The language is formal. The story makes heavy use of humor and irony.
