Presentation of the text

Title: The Little Prince (1943)

Author: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Genre: Novella

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) was a French writer, journalist, and aviator, best known for his novella The Little Prince. Saint-Exupéry considered himself a pilot first and foremost and only a part time writer. Apart from The Little Prince, he also published novels such as Night Flight (1931) and The Wisdom of the Sands (published posthumously in 1948), as well as the memoir related to his experiences as a pilot, Wind, Sand and Stars (1939). He won several literary awards for his work. Saint-Exupéry is believed to have died when his plane went down over the Mediterranean Sea in 1944.

The story The Little Prince, published in 1943, is about a pilot who lands in the African desert after his plane crashes. By chance he makes the acquaintance of a child, the little prince, who wants to draw him a sheep. The pilot learns that the little prince comes from another, very small planet, where he has three volcanoes and a rose. He fled from his planet due to differences with the rose. After a journey across several planets, where he met lonely and strange different adults, the little prince finally landed on Earth.

The story of the little prince is much more than just a story for children. It is a philosophical tale that is read over and over again because it contains so much poetry, emotion, and secret messages. The work tells its readers something important about friendship, love, longing, the meaning and values of life, and makes them think. The work was translated in over 150 languages.
