Structure

The short story “The Legacy” by Virginia Woolf uses a linear plot structure as the main character, Gilbert Clandon, reads his late wife’s diary and finds out about her secret affair. The narrative also presents a story inside a story, through the use of Angela’s diary.

The beginning starts with Gilbert preparing to give Sissy Miller the pearl brooch Angela left for her. The brooch highlights the close relationship between the two women, who are not just work colleagues but also friends.
