Literary movement

The short story “The Kiss” by Kate Chopin was published in 1895, at the end of the 19th century. The story belongs to the realist literary movement, which explores real-life issues. In “The Kiss”, Chopin presents the courtship between Nathalie and Brantain, and the events that lead to their marriage. Nathalie is presented as a woman torn between love and her desire to acquire fortune, making her a typical character for a realist short story. Moreover, Nathalie is seen as a rational and independent woman, who is aware of the consequences of her decisions, which are also features belonging to characters seen in realist works.
