Harvy

Harvy appears in the short story “The Kiss” by Kate Chopin. His outer characterization reveals that he is a close friend of Nathalie’s brother: “Mr. Harvy is an intimate friend of long standing” (l. 50). The narrative does not offer information about his background, but we can assume that he does not have the money and social position that Brantain has. 

Harvy is in love with Nathalie. The narrative does not reveal their history together, but we can assume that he has been in a relationship with her for a while. He addresses her with the endearing “Nattie” (l. 29), which shows that they are close. 

Harvy is daring, as revealed by his bold behavior: 

A stride or two brought him to her side, and bending over her chair – before she could suspect his intention, for she did not realize that he had not seen her visitor –...
