Title

The title of the short story “The German Boy” by Ron Butlin has both a literal and a symbolic meaning.

In the literal sense, the title reflects Klaus’ nationality. Klaus is a boy born and raised in Germany by a German mother (p. 93, ll. 7-8). His biological father is also most likely German, and when he arrives in the UK, the boy speaks German (and Latin). The title is also a direct reference to the first sentence of the story, in which the narrator introduces Klaus and refers to him as “the German boy” (p. 91, ll. 3-4). It draws the reader’s attention, signalling that this line is meaningful within the text and it defines the way the story should be read and interpreted.
