Stairs or elevator 

In his novel The Fault in Our Stars, John Green often shows how his characters struggle with the knowledge that they are unlike regular people. Despite the constant pain caused by the cancer, Hazel has a strong will to continue living as normally as possible. She refuses to simply surrender to the disease. For example, in the beginning she doesn't want to take the elevator at the support group either. She deliberately takes the stairs to show to herself and the others that she still has the strength.

However, her physical decline means that later in the novel she is glad to have an excuse to take the elevator. When she attends the support group before her trip to Amsterdam, she is glad to leave the room with Isaac because it gives her a reason to take the ...
