Sound

The sad atmosphere of the film is mostly reinforced by melancholic music which highlights Robert’s loneliness and grief. For example, melancholic music plays in the scene in Robert’s living room (05:36-06:30) and draws attention to his breakdown. Melancholic music is also used when Robert eats a sandwich alone on a bench (03:37-04:22).

Towards the end of the film, melancholic music is mixed with diegetic sounds to suggest an increase in tension and to offer an image of how the accident happened. Viewers hear the sound of bicycle wheels turning (09:51-09:57), the sound of car breaks (10:07), and the sound of Jin driving away (10:20-10:23). In the final scenes, the music becomes more intense and covers the sound of Robert’s voice screaming Jin’s name (11:26-11:36). In the concluding scene (11:37-12:10), the music returns to a slow, sad pace, mirroring Robert’s sadness and loneliness.

The film also introduces several scenes which have no music, for example in the scenes when Robert is teaching Jim. Some of these scenes show the interaction between Robert and Jin, and the lack of music makes it easier to focus on their conversations. Moreover, the lack of music in these scenes helps viewers sense Jin’s awkwardness or Robert’s reluctance before saying that he is happy to be Jin’s teacher (05:22-05:27).
