Style of language

The language used by Ernest Hemingway in the short story “The End of Something” is simple and minimalist, using the journalistic style. When it comes to the choice of words, note that the story contains words and expressions related to fishing. The narrative uses words like “perch” (l. 71), “rod” (l. 72), “or “trout” (l. 89). This gives the story a realistic feel.

The story also contains words and expressions connected to the lumber industry. These are mainly present at the beginning of the story, when Hortons Bay is described: 

The schooner moved out of the bay toward the open lake, carrying the two great saws, the travelling carriage that hurled the logs against the revolving, circular saws and all the rollers, wheels, belts and iron piled on a hull-deep load of lumber. (ll. 8-11)
