The Derawals

The Derawal family are important characters in The Embassy of Cambodia by Zadie Smith. The Derawals are an Asian family, most likely from India or Pakistan, judging by their last name. They now live in the United Kingdom. Mr. and Mrs. Derawal have three children: Julie, Faizul, and the youngest, Asma. They live in Willesden and employ Fatou as their housemaid and nanny – but do not pay her. 

Despite the fact that they might be immigrants themselves, the Derawals do not have sympathy for Fatou and do not hesitate to exploit her . In contrast to Fatou, they represent the immigrants who have become well-established and wealthy in their new country and do not mind mistreating others to keep their status. ...
