Similes

During the bush-fire, Tommy “worked like a little hero” (p. 3, l. 37) by the side of his mother as they tried to beat out the flames. The simile suggests Tommy’s courage and determination and his willingness to take on responsibilities far greater than his age would allow. Under the harsh circumstances, he was forced to mature faster and become stronger.

Alligator’s “chawing-up apparatus greatly resembled that of the reptile he was named after” (p. 4, l. 31). This highlights the dog’s fierce appearance, which the drover’s wife takes advantage of to drive off unwelcome strangers.

As he catches hold of the snake, the dog “shakes the snake as though he felt the original curse in common with mankind” (p. 6, ll. 5-6). This simile highlights the idea that the snake is a symbol of evil and is seen as a danger to the family.
