Diary entry 68
Place: secret annex
Time: Sunday, July 11, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Edith Frank-Holländer, Miep Gies, Otto Frank, Margot Frank
Summary:
Anne tries hard to be more exemplary and well-behaved so that she can give less cause for scolding. She finds it difficult to pretend and to avoid giving everyone her honest opinion. She still often falls back into old patterns and is then immediately criticized again for weeks by the adults, which she tries to accept with humor.
In the meantime, Anne has become very nearsighted. She urgently needs glasses. Miep Gies wants to take her to the ophthalmologist, but in the secret annex they are discussing whether going out on the street would not be too reckless.
Diary entry 69
Place: secret annex
Time: Tuesday, July 13, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Albert Dussel, Otto Frank
Summary:
Anne and Albert Dussel get into a heated argument about who is allowed to use the desk in their shared room and at what times. While Anne was previously only allowed to work at the desk during Albert's nap, she wants his permission to use it twice a week in the afternoon as well. Albert immediately refuses her request, complaining about her selfishness and dismissing her work as childish. Only when Anne's father interferes and talks to Albert does the latter reluctantly give in.
Diary entry 70
Place: secret annex
Time: Friday, July 16, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Peter van Daan, Otto Frank, Mr. Kleiman
Summary:
The company's warehouse was broken into during the night. However, the residents in the secret annex did not hear any noises during the night and did not notice the break-in until the next morning. In addition to money and checkbooks, the burglars also stole sugar coupons, which were very rare.
Diary entry 71
Place: secret annex
Time: Monday, July 19, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank
Summary:
The previous day, the northern part of Amsterdam was heavily bombed. The streets were considerably devastated. There were numerous dead and injured. The noise coming from the bombs could be clearly heard in the secret annex.
Diary entry 72
Place: secret annex
Time: Friday, July 23, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Margot Frank, Edith Frank-Holländer
Summary:
The secret annex can be supplied with notebooks again because these are now available without coupons. Margot wants to take a correspondence course in calligraphy. Anne must give it up because of her nearsightedness. All annex residents long for the end of the hiding period. Everyone misses the everyday luxuries that are taken for granted in peacetime, such as a hot bath or a good meal.
Diary entry 73
Pages: 123-125
Place: secret annex
Time: Monday, July 26, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Margot Frank, Peter van Daan, Mr. and Mrs. van Daan, Otto Frank, Albert Dussel
Summary:
The previous day, air-raid alarms were heard several times in Amsterdam. Numerous bombs were dropped, and large parts of the city were set on fire as a result. However, the secret annex was spared. Since the people in hiding could not leave the annex to seek refuge in an air-raid shelter, they had no choice but to wait in fear for the attacks to end.
The next morning, as it is announced that Hitler's ally, the Italian Mussolini, has left, there is hope again in the secret annex that the war will end soon despite an air-raid alarm.
Diary entry 74
Place: secret annex
Time: Thursday, July 29, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Mrs. van Daan, Albert Dussel
Summary:
Anne has another argument with Mrs. van Daan and Albert Dussel, which infuriates her. Both complain once again about her allegedly unsuccessful upbringing and criticize her for talking too much about topics that are not suitable for her age. Anne, on the other hand, is sure that it is not her but the other two who are badly brought up. She especially thinks Mrs. van Daan is a hypocrite.
Diary entry 75
Place: secret annex
Time: Tuesday, August 3, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Albert Dussel, Mrs. and Mr. van Daan, Mr. Kleiman
Summary:
The banning of the fascist party in Italy gives the annex residents hope that Italy may soon withdraw from the war.
Anne's regard for Mrs. van Daan and Albert Dussel diminishes even further. In the case of Mrs. van Daan it is because she constantly presents herself as courageous but is the most fearful of all in an emergency. As for Albert Dussel, Anne thinks he has no political understanding whatsoever.
Diary entry 76
Place: secret annex
Time: Wednesday, August 4, 1943
Characters: Anne Frank, Albert Dussel, Margot Frank, Otto Frank, Mr. and Mrs. van Daan
Summary:
To give her diary friend Kitty a better insight into life in the secret annex, Anne wants to describe to her, piece by piece, her detailed daily routine. In this entry she describes the evening and the night. Each evening, those in hiding must prepare the beds in their rooms, come to terms with the limited washing facilities, and take into account the different habits and idiosyncrasies of the others. Privacy in the cramped annex is virtually non-existent. In addition, at night they can often hear gunfire from the war raging outside.

Since the warehouse workers leave the building during their lunch break, the residents in the secret annex are free to move around for a little over an hour. Typically, they have a cup of soup with their helpers and are informed by them and the English radio about what is happening in the outside world. Anne's quietest hours follow lunch. While Albert Dussel takes his afternoon nap, she can use the desk.
