She still often falls back into old patterns and is then immediately criticized again for weeks by the adults, which she tries to accept with humor.

In the meantime, Anne has become very nearsighted. She urgently needs glasses. Miep Gies wants to take her to the ophthalmologist, but in the secret annex they are discussing whether going out on the street would not be too reckless.

Albert immediately refuses her request, complaining about her selfishness and dismissing her work as childish. Only when Anne's father interferes and talks to Albert does the latter reluctantly give in.

The previous day, air-raid alarms were heard several times in Amsterdam. Numerous bombs were dropped, and large parts of the city were set on fire as a result. However, the secret annex was spared. Since the people in hiding could not leave the annex to seek refuge in an air-raid shelter, they had no choice but to wait in fear for the attacks to end.

The next morning, as it is announced that Hitler's ally, the Italian Mussolini, has left, there is hope again in the secret annex that the war will end soon despite an air-raid alarm.

Anne's regard for Mrs. van Daan and Albert Dussel diminishes even further. In the case of Mrs. van Daan it is because she constantly presents herself as courageous but is the most fearful of all in an emergency. As for Albert Dussel, Anne thinks he has no political understanding whatsoever.

Each evening, those in hiding must prepare the beds in their rooms, come to terms with the limited washing facilities, and take into account the different habits and idiosyncrasies of the others. Privacy in the cramped annex is virtually non-existent. In addition, at night they can often hear gunfire from the war raging outside.
