First year in the secret annex

Diary entry 12

Place: hiding place of the Frank family and the van Daans in the secret annex (263, Prinsengracht  Amsterdam)

Time: Thursday, July 9, 1942 (partial narrative about Monday, July 6, 1942)

Characters: Anne Frank, Otto Frank, Edith Frank-Holländer

Summary:

Anne recounts the morning of her escape to the hiding place. Her parents had been preparing their arrival for months. They had originally planned to go into hiding in another ten days. However, since the summons from the SS to Margot overturned their plans, the hideout is not yet fully equipped for their coming.

The hideout is located in the two-story annex at the back of the office building of the Opekta company, the old workplace of Otto Frank. Anne's family has two small rooms available, one for her parents and one for Margot and her. Once the van Daans arrive, they will sleep in the shared kitchen, and their son, Peter, will have his own room, although it is a tiny one.

The office staff of four, consisting of Mr. Kugler, Mr. Kleiman, Miep Gies, and typist Bep Voskuijl, know about the families' arrival and the hiding place in the annex. They will take over the care of those in hiding. The three warehouse workers, however, don't know about it.

Time: Saturday, July 11, 1942

Characters: Anne Frank, Margot Frank, Otto Frank, Edith Frank-Holländer

Summary:

Although Anne thinks the annex in the back of the house is an ideal hiding place, she is sure that she will never feel at home here. In the evenings, the family can leave the annex and spend time in the more spacious offices of the company, because the office building borders on two companies where no people are present at night. Nevertheless, Anne is very afraid that someone will see or hear her in the office.

During the day, the family has to be very quiet as well, to avoid being heard by the warehouse workers. None of them are ever allowed to leave the building or even look out the window.

The family they befriend, the van Daans, are scheduled to arrive at the hideout the following Tuesday. Anne looks forward to their coming. The silence in the house makes her extremely nervous, especially in the evenings.
